Sexual harassment in kindergarten

It took less than a day for my anxieties about my son going to kindergarten to come true. No, it wasn't the thought of sending him off to a big school or the idea that he was going to have to leave for school before I left for work. No, it was the bully.

Second Week, Second Day of School--and Asking Schedule Advice (9/15/09)

Interesting experience today. I was woken up early this morning by my six year old: "Mom, wake up! I think I missed the school bus!" I told him to quickly go outside (while I scrambled out of bed) and see if the other kids were outside at the bus stop. When I raced downstairs and outside, there was my six year old dutifully waiting all by himself at the bus stop.

Can I Wear This as a "Great Mom" Badge?

I got a compliment from my oldest daughter on her sixteenth birthday two days ago. Before I tell you what is was, I must first say that I am as filled with insecurities about how I am doing as a mom as the next person, and we make all of our mistakes with our first, I'm told.

No Pumpkins Yet Please!

I walked into Krogers last week, and the lobby display was full of orange gourds in every size. I winced. Please, let me enjoy a few more weeks of thinking that it is summer! I am seriously not ready yet for the witches and goblins that are in display on aisle two. The bags of candy next to the costumes make me quickly avert my eyes.

Squishing in the Last Bit of Summer (9/12/09)

School may have started, but I'm determined that the summer has not yet ended. We have tickets to Ocean Breeze, which we received several months ago (and sadly, did not yet use). This is the last weekend to use the tickets before Ocean Breeze closes up. It may be only 80 degrees (maybe), but it is sunny so I'm forcing the family there.

I declare war on... (9/11/09)

I declare war on...my dirty house! That's it! I'm tired of seeing dusty baseboards, finger-streaked windows, mucked up walls, bits and pieces on the carpet, and clutter around that need not be here! After living in our home for six years, it's all getting to me.

Reflections from the First Week of School (9/11/09)

My "babies" are truly *big boys* now--one was off to kindergarten this week, and the other to 1st grade (yikes!). I am completing recovery from a surgery, so I am off of work this week and got to experience the first week (well, most of a week) of school...and am glad I had the opportunity to do so (although it was a week of rather crazy weather and emotion).

Helping our Kids to be Body-Image Healthy

Having four girls, I am constantly trying to encouraging them to eat healthy and exercise, and reminding myself not to pass on my own issues with food and body image. From about the age of nine I struggled with being overweight.

The Teen Years Start at Eleven

It has begun. The mumbling. The pulling away from physical touch. The obsession with privacy. My eleven year old Maddie is showing every sign of turning into a teen, and it happened in one week, I swear! She had begun the physical changes, so I knew the hormonal brain would kick in soon, but I had hoped it would hold off til next spring. No such luck.
