Did Miley cross the line?

It's not easy for a 42-year-old to admit she's a fan of Miley Cyrus, but I am. She's raking in millions because she can act, sing and dance, and her exuberance inspires me. But her performance at the Teen Choice awards on Monday tells me it's time to leave Hannah Montana and her 4-year-old fans, and even those still in middle school and maybe even high school, behind. Show biz makes you grow up fast and when you see how Miley (did you know she legally changed her name to that from Destiny Hope a few months back? See, I told you I was a fan!) dips her toe across the appropriate/inappropriate line in this performance, you can tell she's itching to appeal to older teens and 20-somethings (and the occasional pop-obsessed mom).

It's not that she's wild or overly sexy for most of this performance -- but the shorts, the open leg, knee bend!, the side- and back-exposed bra and what you might call a stripper pole (it could have been just a half bar and would have been so much more acceptable!) make me nervous. My 10-year-old daughter said it was "kinda-sorta" too sexy. Good call, sweetie. And, again, if that's the way Miley wants to go, go ahead -- without Hannah and the toddler, tweens and teeny-boppers.
