In the Eye of the Storm: Preparing for Hurricane Season

With the summer heat upon us, it reminds me that we are in Hurricane Season. Unfortunately, should something head our way, it is usually left to the Military Spouse at home to handle all prep work, and make contingency plans.

Beyond the usual items (things like 1 gallon of water, per person, per day; non-perishable food; batteries; etc.), we keep a grab box of things we would need to have with us, should we need to evacuate. My grab box contains:

  • Birth certificates and social security cards
  • Insurance policies
  • Powers of Attorney
  • Medical records
  • School binders (2 of my children have special needs and have active IEPs)
  • An atlas
  • Credit cards
  • Two complete changes of clothes for each of us

In addition to about a million different sites you can visit for Hurricane Preparedness (sites like: The Weather Channel, FEMA, and PilotOnline), our local Commissaries are thinking about preparedness, too.  Check out the offical Commissary website for a number of great reference sites, including Tricare Disaster Information.

Let’s all stay smart, stay aware and be prepared for emergency weather.

What are some of your tips to add to my grab box?
