Free Movies - Beware
I am a thrifty mom but I rarely take advantage of the summer free movies. Here is why - daycares and full time summer camps also take advantage of them taking up rows and rows of seats. There about 20 campers per one adult so those kids don't get in trouble when they misbehave. While the movies are free, the snacks are not - at full price. And forget about throwing in some treats in your purse, a teenage usher makes you open your purse upon entering the building to make sure a piece of gum is not brought in to the theatre. I felt violated when I was required to do it. Last summer we did it once for a movie my daughters really wanted to see on big screen. The previous summer was such a bad experience. So take this in account when thinking about venturing to one of these "free" movies.
Consider supporting your local library (which your tax dollars are paying for). They also offer free movies complete with free popcorn, but the seats are not as comfortable. And many parks offer free movies outside as well where you can sit in your own lawn chair. Those movies allow coolers and your own snacks. The lines are usually long for the vendors. Plan on your kids sitting in an adult lawn chair, not kiddie ones because they will not be able to see. The best outdoor movies spot on the Peninsula is Buckroe Beach because the screen is on a stage not the ground, so there is no bad spot to set up your family. Where is your favorite free movie spot?
