I hate jewelry ads
Every year, the push for men to buy their wives/girlfriends expensive jewelry seems to start earlier. Already, we're hearing "Every Kiss Begins with Kay" and other TV ads several times a night. I can't stand how women come across in these segments, and I also hope my young boys aren't internalizing the message that this is how relationships work. Is a gold necklace or pearl earrings really proof of a spouse's love? I say no way. I'm not much of a jewelry person in general, granted, but personally I'd rather have my husband plan a special date for us, find a cute and inexpensive personal gift and, on a daily basis, shoulder his share of the parenting and housework duties. For me, that's where kisses truly begin. And that's a whole lot harder than shelling out some money for an expensive bauble.

I guess this varies from
I guess this varies from woman to woman...A few women like jewelry because it makes them feel good when they wear it. Some probably wear it to convey their social status, they like Fair Trade Jewellery and some just wear it because it is pretty.

thats me
I wear it because it makes me feel beautiful, when I am having a bad hair day or am just feeling blah, a pair of earrings makes all the difference! My walk changes like sneakers to knee high leather black boots.
have to disagree
I would love for my husband to take the time to go to the jewelers and plan a surprise for me! I am with you on wanting a special date as well, but mine is NOT romantic! And I do get scarred like a little kid if it is a big storm LOL I wish I wasnt the adult in the house, I have no bed to jump into but my own and when hubby is out to sea I get into my sons bed and pretend to comfort him when really it is helping me, hes 5.
Power to the women
So funny you wrote this because I saw a commercial last night for jewelry that drove me crazy. The woman jumps from hearing a storm and her husband says something like "I'm here; I'm always here." Yes, we sometimes get scared and it IS nice to know we have our husbands' support but this woman in the commercial looked like a little child jumping up in fear. Another one shows a woman doing dishes. Of course we do dishes, but I hate that that is the moment the commercial producers chose as being representative of what a woman does. Yuck. I don't have anything against jewelry and I don't have anything against my hubby giving me jewelry, but couldn't the commercials be less stereotypical? I much prefer the ads (think they've been mostly print) that encourage women to buy their own jewelry -- that they can reward themselves.
