Learning from the SuperNanny

The new SuperNanny on Lifetime drew me in with her smile this weekend -- and I watched three shows in a row. It wasn't her smile that kept me sitting there glued to the screen, though: It was her wise advice and miraculous results. She was able to help one family with 10 children and another with five that seemed to be past the point of no return. The kids were out of control, and the parents thought they had the right ideas in place, but they had fallen off track. Here's my reminder list which I hope will keep me from gettting derailed:

1. Stay calm. The kids learn by example. (Oh, I have so much work to do with this goal.)

2. Repeat the reason why you've placed the kids in a "calm down corner." I like calling it that vs. the time out spot. You might have to keep reeating it and gently placing him/her there, but keep at it. It will work. One mom had to repeat the process 103 times.

3. Try to redirect kids instead of yelling. You're creative; you can do it.

4. Offer comfort. If your child has been wronged by a sibling, recognize it and offer sympathy and a hug.

5. Be consistent. Decide on your approach and stick to it.

6. Don't put too much responsibility on older kids. They might be able to perform the tasks you ask of them, but they'll miss out on a childhood.

7. Keep concerns about a child to yourself and share only with your spouse or friend. Don't talk to one child about the others.

8. Explain expectations beforehand so they're clear.

9. Offer simple awards for regular good behavior.

10. Communicate and coordinate with your spouse.

There you go -- parenthood in 10 easy steps. If they don't work, I'll be calling the SuperNanny myself and booking her in, but only if she'll allow me to wear a mask so no one can see just how much I have to learn after 12 and a half years being a mom!
